what are you thankful for?

popup“…nearly 53 billion land animals are slaughtered every year for human consumption.”

This is not me trying to make anyone feel guilty for enjoying their Thanksgiving. And this is not me trying to encourage you to do something that you don’t want to do. This is me bringing up a subject that I find interesting and is becoming news more and more each day. Also, I love the op-ed page.

hmm…interesting. i still don’t know how i feel about veganism, though. having animals on a farm is good for a multitude of things (weed control, fertilizer, etc.), and products like milk and eggs are possible to obtain while keeping the animals’ lives intact. not to mention, cheese is delicious. i think that a more effective way of encouraging veganism is not to tell people that they are horrendously immoral, like steiner did, but rather to tell people about the environmental and health benefits of forgoing meat. positive reinforcement is much more powerful and permanent tool than ethical finger-wagging.
