it’s a bagel day.

First of all. Thank you notdrugs for inspiring me to fall in love with THE BLACK KEYS. They are smart, rock really hard and like all things weird in my life, they are two incredibly sexy men. They’re playing Philadelphia July 30th. Who’s in?

Also there is a lot going on. We graduated. The oil spill is destroying our planet and not helping the fact that something is terribly wrong with the world, physically (I suppose emotionally too.) Add on all the hurricanes and abnormalities. I’ve been saying that something is not right with the world for a long time. This just proves it.

And if you weren’t nervous about the new military planes developed that can track footprints from the sky and tell you their origin, try this on for size.

The world makes me sick. Pay attention, because I know that you aren’t. A lot of wrong and weird is happening: oil, the number one MLB pick is 17 (he can’t even buy cigarettes yet!) meanwhile M.I.A. is being featured in the Sunday New York Times Magazine. James Cameron offered (and was turned down) help for filming the deep sea atrocity going on in the gulf. But in the end, my least favorite thing about the world is plain and simple- Obama promised us he would end the war and he hasn’t yet.

Drunk Girls, I realized, is more than you think. James Murphy has something to say. Drunk Girls know that love is an astronaut/It comes back, but it’s never the same. I never heard them before this record, but I like it. Sometimes if you pay attention there’s more to life than, well, life. Also, if you haven’t started doing this yet, I recommend it.

The Saturday night before graduation my sisters, brother-in-law, co-brother-in-law, Morgan and myself made it out to Korova (which yes, is moving down State Street to avoid the college crowd, but is not moving until August.) My brother-in-law’s life long best friend arrived and greeted me in saying “welcome to unemployment!” So far it’s been nice. I’ve been on three job interviews in three days in three very different cities. I am unemployed yes, so I should find more time to do this here blog.

Pay attention already
. What else could you possibly be doing?

checker boards and smarty pants

...just the 3D entrance way.

...just the 3D entrance!

Well, I had an awesome weekend. My roommate and I actually made it to Manhattan to see the Tim Burton exhibit. Let me tell you, it was INCREDIBLE. Inspiring for someone (or anyone) who loves unconventional art. Thought provoking- you see it so crowded and it makes you wonder why people are drawn to this weirdness? I think it’s the fame. But then people of all kind show up. We were in line between two families whose primary language was almost unidentifiable. Everyone loves it! Go see it. The art on display is FREAKY- let me tell you, it really does creep and crawl, splatter and gurgle on the pages and it’s completely bizarre. Online, it says their tickets are sold out. But if you get there when the museum opens at 10:30a and wait in line, you get in, no issue. Plus student tickets are 12 dollars!

In addition to that. Mary found this and sent it to me. I think it’s wild and you should probably take a look at it. Ithaca is a town of smarty pants, and this just exemplifies it to no end. I’m sure none of these things actually happen. But it would be quite funny if it did.

oscars and vampires

My apologies to all! It has been over a week and I have not contributed anything. My life has been taken captive by…wait for it….HOMEWORK. Woah. Yes, I know. I’ve actually been doing it- mostly. There is a lot of schedule setting and laying down to get life in order the first couple of weeks in the semester, but now I think we’ve all found our swing. Last Monday when they announced the Ocsars I meant to publish this.

I had the privilege of seeing Precious. It is a not a feel good- but if you can handle such a heavy subject I recommend it. The acting is so strong and the story propels itself, you will not be disappointed. Also I saw Avatar for the second time with a friend who hadn’t seen it yet. And I will say after all the glory and press and hubub – it lost its shock and awe to me. My friend was glad to see it, and said despite its ‘orgasmic’ visuals, it was an old story. The first time I saw it was a couple days after it had been released and my dad practically dragged me to it- neither of us had ANY idea what it was about. I can say it is award worthy, but not necessarily Best Picture material. On a side note: if you have not seen The Hurt Locker, do so now. Also something that I didn’t know James Cameron and Kathryn Bigelow (director of the Hurt Locker) are now divorced. I think it adds a little something interesting to the Best Director race, and Best Picture race.

To keep up with the Ocsars, feel free to bookmark this. It is the Times’ blog on the Awards Season.

The Hurt Locker

If you are looking for a little something, I just stumbled upon this. It is a retrospective of Vampires in film. Note that the only one that looks out of place is the crazy hunky one from Twilight (which I have still never seen or read any of, and I am not ashamed to admit I am curious and wouldn’t be opposed to seeing the first movie one day- just the first.)

Now I know you are thinking that I must have a deal with the Times (I wish!!) because I am always posting and blogging about their sites and information. Indeed I don’t. It my favorite site and news source that I read the most and trust the most. So be it.

If you are looking for more Olympic fun- there is a great photo essay in the Sunday Times Magazine. Check it out.

Now, go enjoy the Super Bowl!

life, other rules & readings

When its time to slow down. Wait, when is it time to slow down? Is the the fact that we are the multi-task generation? Or is the the fact that we are so multi-task that almost everyone I know can’t do two things at once? We’ve lost focus of the real things important in our lives like face to face friendships (why I don’t have Facebook/didn’t let it take over my life). People are on adderall, whether or not its prescribed to them. More and more young children, as publications tell us, are being ‘over-parented’ and controlled beyond belief. (What will our kids be like??) You know them and I know them, the people around campus who use it to get their work done, get the A. It really freaks me out. We’ve lost celebs to prescription drugs because the people close to them never did anything about it (Heath Ledger, Michael Jackson, maybbbbe Brittany Murphy? and more…) I know this all sounds like a drastic comparison, but if we don’t ever look at it or ignore crazy things happening they might just continue to happen.

Our society is focused on instant news and information. The reason the Tonight Show was tanking in the first place is the fact that by the time we get to 11:35p to hear the day’s jokes- so much has been said that it’s old news. It’s no one’s fault (well, maybe Jay Leno’s).  Our constant age-of-anxiety lives are too much to handle. Life is progressing forward and we are all in a hurry to do whatever it is that is constantly stressing us out. We are in a hurry to do things that sometimes don’t even matter or contribute. I want to give you some advice from piecing things together, specifically from GOOD.

Here is something grand. I recommend everyone just slow down and read it. Also, if you need a good read here’s another.

where have i been?

Sorry friends, for those avid ‘cant readers. After spending time setting up shop on my sister’s pull out couch in Cambridge and then making room in my sister’s bed in Steamboat Springs, CO- I’ve been blowing off radio break staff and traveling.  Inadvertently, I’ve spent no more than four consecutive nights in any one place this entire break. With plenty of time to think I’ve had a lot of realizations and crazy adventures. Its been a great time for all involved.

Last night was the Golden Globe Awards. Here you can find a slide show of all the winners. Its the best, quickest way to get your information. Also, the New Yorker lets me fall in love with it every edition. A personal fave, if you’ve never read his writing I recommend it. Woody Allen pops up every once in a while and it just makes me glow. Even though he married his adopted daughter (which is totally weird and unacceptable) I still love him.

look at that face.

look at that face

Also, I’ve tried to read Youth in Revolt but it didn’t work out. Pawned as a journal then realizing it was actually fiction, I just couldn’t do it. But my sister’s excitement about the movie makes me think I should give the typecast Michael Cera a chance. Debroah Soloman did. Her ‘Questions For…’ column surprised me with this. A great interviewer at that, here is her latest…check it out.

Life has been all over the place. Home in JERRR SEEE and then back to the homeland of Ithaca tomorrow. Will be there indefinitely. (Well, maybe to Buffalo soon too.) I need to plan more adventures to see Wilco (sadly for the first time, but not the last) in Feb. and Dr. Dog by the end of the month. –If you haven’t started listening to Dr. Dog you’re crazy and our friendship is at risk. They are playing Syracuse on Jan. 30th and I am definitely going. Any fans who want to join, must. Their youtubes aren’t the best. But check them out: they pride themselves, or categorize shall I say, with dissonance, harmonies and minor chords. A favorite of mine, I can’t help but pass it along.

This semester brings shenanigans – so lets have some fun, eh?

america’s family turns 20

Tonight on Fox the Simpsons will air their 450th episode, “The Simpsons 20th Anniversary Special: In 3-D! On Ice!” I actually just set my DV-R to it. First there is an episode that makes no big deal about it, then an hour long “documentary” -if you will- by the one and only Morgan Spurlock. You know him because he chose to eat McDonalds for an entire month proving to the world that we are shit heads in the way that we eat (please, eat better.) He says that “the world may end in 2012, but this show won’t,” Spurlock seems like just the character to make this kind of film.

Officially its the longest running show in prime-time history. It first appeared on the Tracy Ullman show in 1987, pre-my-existence, as a series of shorts. The Simpsons has won 25 Emmy Awards, we all saw The Simpsons Movie in 2007 and don’t forget that the Oxford English Dictionary included D’oh! as a word. The show has, kind of, changed the world and changed television and the way we watch (write) it. Something like this only comes along every twenty years or so.

Point being is, check it out! I love cultural phenomenons- they are my favorite thing, literally. And when something is as easy to be a part of as a television show, you can’t help but watch.

Dogs, Thanks to the Internet

Dogs on the Internet, while not as popular or beloved as cats, are still a humorous subject. Here are some worthy pictures I’ve extracted from CyberSpace…

This first one is a little reminiscent of the Halloween costume which gives the illusion you are riding a horse or dragon, while in reality, your costumed legs function as the legs of said dragon or horse.

Up and Away~!

This next dog picture features a monkey, which may be an unfair advantage, but the effectual message being sent from finger to hand says so much:

Monkey: "eh, excuuuse me!"

Lastly, this sweatered dog has a request, or rather a demand…

clothes on animlas = funny
